Approaching the fiscal cash register limit? See how to calculate it and when you must install the device

Do you sell to individual retail customers and wonder when you must install a fiscal cash register? Do not wait until the last minute. Exceeding the turnover limit is the moment when regulations strictly require you to record sales on a fiscal device. If you miss this deadline, you will lose the right to claim the tax relief and expose yourself to severe tax penalties. As your partner, the Fiskasy.pl team will help you accurately calculate your limit and select equipment that ensures peace of mind and legal compliance from the very first transaction after exceeding the set threshold.

The key facts you need to know right now:

  • Limit amount: In 2026, the threshold exempting you from having a cash register is 20 000 zł net per year (or gross for VAT-exempt taxpayers).

  • Who it applies to: The limit covers only sales to private individuals (consumers) and flat-rate farmers. B2B transactions confirmed by invoice do not count towards this pool.

  • Implementation deadline: After exceeding the amount, you have until the end of the second month to install the cash register.

  • Penalties for delay: Failure to install on time means losing the 700 zł tax relief for purchasing the equipment and facing fiscal fines.

  • Exceptions to the rule: Industries such as gastronomy, vehicle mechanics, as well as doctors, lawyers, and sellers of coal, e-cigarettes, or alcoholic beverages over 1.2% must have a cash register from the very first sale, regardless of turnover.

How to correctly calculate your retail turnover?

You must know that absolutely every transaction made with a private individual counts towards the limit. It does not matter whether you sell with 23%, 8%, or 5% VAT – you sum up your entire net retail sales.

If you benefit from subjective VAT exemption or run an unregistered business activity, your gross amount equals your net amount. In that case, all revenue from sales to consumers adds up directly towards the 20 000 zł limit. Furthermore, the limit is assigned to your NIP (tax identification number). If you sell goods and provide services at the same time within a single company, you must sum up all retail turnover generated this way.

Starting during the year? Calculate the proportional limit

The 20 000 zł pool is available only if you conduct sales throughout the entire calendar year. If you start a business during the year (or resume its suspended activity), you must calculate the threshold proportionally to the number of days remaining until the end of December.

Example: Mr. Jan opens a handicraft gallery on March 1, 2026. He has exactly 306 days remaining until the end of the year. His proportional threshold will be exactly 16 767,12 zł. From the moment this amount is exceeded, the exemption no longer applies to him.

When exactly do you need to finalize the purchase of the cash register?

When your turnover exceeds the designated threshold, act decisively. The regulations give you time until the end of the second month following the month in which the limit was exceeded. If you exceed the threshold, for example, in March, April and May are the months to purchase, install, and fiscalize. From June 1, an online fiscal cash register ready for operation must be on your desk to register every subsequent transaction. Remember that the device must also receive a registration number from the Tax Office.
